Three-Point Progression

Has any shot become more associated with the modern NBA than the three-point jumper?

Teams have realized the inherent efficiency of shots worth an additional tick on the scoreboard, and they’ve acted accordingly. Rates have skyrocketed in recent years, and 11 of the 20 best individual seasons, by our analysis, have taken place since 2010. Expand the range to the top 50 efforts, and you’re looking at 21 since 2010.

But who’s become the greatest three-point marksman of all time?

Methodology

To find the three-point value added for a player in any given season, we’re taking the following steps:

  1. Translate three-point percentage into points per three-point shot (three-point percentage multiplied by three).
  2. Find the difference between a player’s points per three-point shot and the league average during the relevant season.
  3. Multiply the difference by the number of shots, essentially combining volume and efficiency to find the value added on three-point shooting relative to what a league-average player would’ve done with that number of attempts.

Career scores are calculated easily from that point, simply summing the marks earned during all seasons of a player’s career.

Flaws

This is by no means a perfect examination of basketball history, so treat it as a baseline if you desire.

Flaw No. 1: The Shortened Arc

From the beginning of the 1994-95 season through the conclusion of the 1996-97 campaign, the NBA experimented with a shorter three-point arc before reverting back to the original length. This naturally made it easier for players to connect at higher clips, as you can see by looking at the league-wide numbers during the three relevant seasons and the ones surrounding it:

  • 1993-94: 33.3 percent on 9.9 attempts per game
  • 1994-95: 35.9 percent on 15.3 attempts per game
  • 1995-96: 36.7 percent on 16.0 attempts per game
  • 1996-97: 36.0 percent on 16.8 attempts per game
  • 1997-98: 34.6 percent on 12.7 attempts per game

This analysis, however, doesn’t adjust for the short-arc period. The methodology remains the same, which allows players to rack up higher scores during the trio of aforementioned go-rounds.

Flaw No. 2: Doesn’t Account for Different Types of Three-Pointers

Not every three-pointer is the same, but they’re all treated equally for our purposes. We’re not factoring in the strength of the set-up feeds, the proximity of the closest defenders, a team’s likelihood of grabbing an offensive rebound, a team’s offensive success relative to the league average or, most importantly, the manners in which the triples were created.

Take Stephen Curry and Kyle Korver as examples. The former has required assists on only 61 percent of his made treys throughout his impressive career, consistently demonstrating an impressive ability to create deep looks off the bounce. The latter, meanwhile, has needed set-up passes for 96.5 percent of his successful triples, almost always serving as an off-ball threat who feasts on catch-and-shoot jumpers. Those two numbers suggest entirely different shooting profiles, but there’s no differentiation here.

Only the raw results matter.
